• Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

  Complaints involving mortgage lending discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin are covered by the Fair Housing Act (FHAct). HUD is the federal agency that handles these complaints.

  HUD also investigates alleged violations of the federal Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), which prohibits the payment of kickbacks by mortgage loan settlement service providers and also regulates certain mortgage escrow account practices.
